Arsenal target Xavi Simons can only leave PSG for a hefty fee

According to Ben Jacobs, the likes of Arsenal will have to pay an ‘exceptional’ fee if they’re to sign on-loan Paris Saint-Germain star Xavi Simons this summer.

Last summer, PSG decided to re-sign Simons for the £3 million buyback clause in his exit deal to PSV, following a spectacular season in which he scored 22 goals and assisted 12 times in 48 games. It’s interesting that they re-signed him only to loan him out to RB Leipzig.

At Leipzig, the 21-year-old has continued his resurgence. In 41 games, the La Masia product has nine goals and 15 assists. The German club would undoubtedly have wanted to keep him long-term; however, their loan agreement includes a no-buy option.

Simons has attracted plenty of interest with reports claiming that Arsenal are among the clubs keen on signing the Dutch international this summer.

PSG undecided about Simons

However, transfer insider Ben Jacobs has now issued an update on Simons’ future and says it’s unclear whether PSG will sell or keep him this summer.

Leipzig are hoping to re-sign him on loan, and Jacobs believes they are in a good position to do so. The journalist says it would require an ‘exceptional’ offer from another club to persuade PSG to sell.

Jacobs tweeted,

“PSG are deciding whether to recall Xavi Simons this summer or renew his loan with Leipzig. Real chance of the latter. Some short-term complexities to navigate with club finalising their plans. A sale to another club is seen as less likely and would require an exceptional offer.”

Transfermarkt values the playmaker at £68 million, but it’s unclear how much PSG would want to sell this summer.

It will be interesting to see whether Arsenal will formalise their interest in Simons with a formal offer. There is no doubting his quality and he may be the perfect complement to Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice in Arsenal’s engine room.

However, it remains to be seen whether PSG opt to keep him, sell him, or loan him to Leipzig for another season.
