Arsenal interested in signing Lens star Lois Openda

By on April 27, 2023

Arsenal are reportedly looking to sign RC Lens forward Lois Openda in the upcoming summer window, as per the Spanish outlet Fichajes.

It has widely been suggested that the Gunners are exploring the possibility of signing a new prolific goal-scorer to support Gabriel Jesus for next season.

They have already been linked with lots of strikers ahead of the summer window with Rasmus Hojlund, Dusan Vlahovic, Jonathan David and Victor Osimhen among them, but Openda is now emerging as a serious target.

The 23-year-old has been enjoying a stellar campaign for Lens this season, scoring 17 goals and registering three assists in 32 Ligue 1 appearances. The Belgian has been playing a pivotal role in the French club’s quest of qualifying for Champions League football for next season.

According to the report by Fichajes, after being impressed by Openda’s displays for Lens, Arsenal have registered their interest in signing the Belgian to bolster their frontline for next season.

Openda to Arsenal

However, the report says that signing Openda won’t be easy for Arsenal as Aston Villa and Leicester City are also plotting a summer swoop for him.

Openda – valued at around £18m by Transfermarkt – still has more than four years left in his current contract. So, Lens are in a strong position to demand a big fee if Arsenal decide to formalise their interest.

The Lens star is a centre-forward but he can also play on either flank. He is quick, technically sound, has the efficiency to dribble past the opposition defenders in tight areas and can finish off his chances as well.

Openda is a talented player and could be a solid acquisition if Arsenal decide to push forward and get a deal done this summer. However, there is a question mark whether the 23-year-old would be the right option to help the North London club in achieving their lofty ambitions for next season.

So, although Openda could be a very good signing for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future, the Emirates club should consider signing a more established striker to strengthen their front line at the end of this term.
