Arsenal are reportedly prepared to accelerate their pursuit of Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in the upcoming January transfer window, as per the Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (via TuttoJuve).
The 27-year-old joined the Serie A giants back in 2015 from FC Genk for a fee of around £15m. Since joining the club, the midfielder has established himself as a talismanic figure at Stadio Olimpico.
The Serbian has enjoyed a productive first half of this season ahead of the World Cup break, scoring three goals and notching up seven assists in 14 league appearances.
A previous report claimed that Arsenal have been eyeing a move for Milinkovic-Savic for quite a while and they even tabled an official £47m bid to sign the highly-rated midfielder last summer. However, Maurizio Sarri’s side rejected that offer and decided to keep hold of their star man.
Meanwhile, according to the report by Corriere dello Sport (via TuttoJuve), Arsenal are now ready to go ‘all-in’ for Milinkovic-Savic this January. However, they are expected to face tough competition from Juventus for the Serbian’s signature.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to Arsenal
The report further states that Milinkovic-Savic always wanted to stay in Serie A. But, following Arsenal’s resurgence under Mikel Arteta’s guidance this season, the 27-year-old is now open to moving to the Emirates Stadium this winter.
The midfielder – valued at around £51 m by Transfermarkt – is set to enter the final 18 months of his current contract with Lazio and he is yet to agree on signing an extension.
So, if the two parties could not find an agreement anytime soon then Lazio could cash in on their star man this January in order to make the most profit out of the Serbian international’s sale.
However, the Biancoceleste have always asked for a huge fee for their star man and their chief Claudio Lotito earlier mentioned that they want a fee of around £105m to sell him this winter.
Therefore, although Milinkovic-Savic would be an excellent acquisition for Arsenal, it seems highly unlikely that the Gunners would be able to afford the midfielder if Lazio stay firm on their valuation.
