Arsenal are reportedly pondering a move for Corinthians defender Robert Renan, as per recent reports.

It has been widely touted that the Gunners are keen on strengthening their midfield and the flanks during the January transfer window, however, it appears the north London club are also planning ahead with a view to bolstering their backline.

Eintracht Frankfurt star Evan Ndicka and Udinese ace Rodrigo Becao have already been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium in recent weeks, while Renan has now emerged as the latest target for the Gunners.

An earlier report claimed that Arsenal are showing an interest in signing the Brazilian starlet but they face competition from London rivals Chelsea as the Blues are also reportedly keeping an eye on the youngster.

The report also said the north London club might have to activate the South American’s release clause – which is at around €50m (£44m) – to get a deal over the line.

Renan to Arsenal

Gazeta Esportiva are now also claiming that Arsenal are interested in signing Renan – although the report says no formal negotiations have been opened with Corinthians to sign the Brazilian.

The report also says that the player’s agent has frequently travelled to Europe over the past few months to hold talks with potential suitors over a possible move. However, the story didn’t mention whether the agent made any contact with the Gunners specifically.

Robert Renan could be a very good acquisition for Arsenal. The youngster is quick, strong, good at defending and comfortable with possession, however, he lacks qualities in the air. The left-footed defender, standing at 186 cm, can be deployed in the centre-back position as well as in the left-back role.

Therefore, the 19-year-old would be able to deputise for Gabriel Magalhaes. Arteta likes to deploy a left-footed defender in the left-centre-back position but he doesn’t have any alternative option at his disposal to play in that role other than the former LOSC Lille man. As a consequence of that, the Spanish boss is forced to play Magalhaes in almost every game.

Renan’s presence in the squad would help Arteta in managing Gabriel’s minutes. Therefore, the young Brazilian could be a shrewd purchase for Arsenal if the club’s hierarchy manage to get this deal over the line in the upcoming transfer window.
