After beating Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League, Arsenal will have to shift their focus quickly to the Premier League as Mikel Arteta’s side take on Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Gunners came away with a 3-0 victory versus the Norwegian champions at home thanks to the contributions from Eddie Nketiah, Rob Holding and Fabio Vieira.
The north London club have been continuing to enjoy an impressive start to this season as they are currently sitting at the top of the Premier League table with 21 points from eight games. They have also placed themselves at the top of Group A in the Europa League after winning two games in two.
On the other hand, Liverpool haven’t had a great start to their campaign this term. They’ve only managed to accumulate 10 points from seven games in the Premier League, sitting ninth in the table. However, they will be coming into this fixture off the back of a confidence-boosting victory against Rangers in the Champions League.
Arsenal have struggled in this fixture over the past few campaigns as they couldn’t breach Liverpool’s defence in the last six games in all competitions and lost the previous four encounters in the Premier League with an aggregate scoreline of 12-1. But, Arteta’s side will be looking to turn their fortune around on Sunday.
Predicted Arsenal line-up against Liverpool
Arteta shuffled his pack in midweek’s Europa League fixture versus Kjetil Knudsen’s side and provided some crucial game-time to those players who haven’t had the opportunity to play regularly, giving a much-needed breather to the first eleven during this busy period.
They are all set to return to the starting eleven against Liverpool on Sunday with Aaron Ramsdale expected to be in goal and Matt Turner will find himself on the bench after making his second appearance in the Gunners colours in midweek.
William Saliba should also return to the starting eleven on Sunday and Gabriel Magalhães – who is one of the few players started against Bodo/Glimt – could keep hold of his place and commence alongside Saliba.
Following a rest in midweek, Ben White should start at the right-back position, while Oleksandr Zinchenko could be on the opposite side. Therefore, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Rob Holding and Kieran Tierney are all set to find themselves on the bench versus Jurgen Klopp’s side.
After recovering from an injury scare, Thomas Partey started last weekend and scored a stunner in the victory against adversaries Tottenham Hotspur. He will return at the heart of Arsenal’s midfield on Sunday, following a midweek rest, alongside Granit Xhaka. So, Albert Sambi Lokonga could be among the substitutes in this fixture.
Despite displaying a great performance against Bodo/Glimt, Fabio Vieira is expected to commence on the bench against Liverpool with Martin Odegaard regaining his spot in the starting eleven.
Emile Smith Rowe remains sidelined for Arsenal with a groin issue. Reiss Nelson has returned to action against the Norwegian side as the second-half substitute after recovering from an injury, but he isn’t in consideration to start on Sunday.
Bukayo Saka will return to the starting eleven on the right wing, while Gabriel Martinelli should keep hold of his place on the opposite flank. Gabriel Jesus will lead the line for Arteta’s side against Liverpool and therefore, Eddie Nketiah will have to settle for a place on the bench.
