Wenger hints at new signing after confirming major injury blow

So it’s now been confirmed by Arsene Wenger that Francis Coquelin has been ruled out for ‘at least two months’ with a knee injury.

The French midfielder suffered the problem during the opening stages of our loss at West Brom on Saturday and the boss said straight after the game that the injury looked serious.

The newspapers reported earlier today that initial scans had shown significant ligament damage and Coquelin was facing an extended spell on the sidelines.

Unfortunately the media got this one right as Wenger has now confirmed that the 24-year-old will be out for at least two months, although he didn’t want to speculate over a precise time-frame.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of our clash with Dinamo Zagreb, Wenger is quoted as saying by the Express.

“I’m always a bit cautious,”

“It is a least two months but I’m cautious as we had so many bad surprises on scans that I do not want to speculate more than that.

“Certainly for the next two months we play without Coquelin.”

So there we have it. Coquelin is out for the foreseeable future and the most worrying part is Wenger saying it will be ‘at least’ two months. Being Arsenal, I wouldn’t be surprised if Coquelin isn’t back until March.

It’s a horrible situation as we’ve for no viable option to come in for him over the next few months. Arteta’s legs have gone and he’s out with another calf injury while Flamini just isn’t up to the task anymore.

The January window is still six weeks away but thankfully Arsene has hinted that he’s ready to act in the winter despite it being a difficult time to buy.

“I’ll do what’s needed in January even though in January it is not an ideal transfer market.” Arsene is quoted as saying by the Mirror.

Like most fans, I think it’s obvious Arsene should have acted in the summer and signed another defensive midfielder but it would be unthinkable for him to not buy in January following Coquelin’s injury.
