Arsene Wenger On Petr Cech’s Disappointing Display vs West Ham
Arsene Wenger has refused to single out Petr Cech for criticism following his disappointing debut performance against West Ham this afternoon.
Cech arrived at the Emirates this summer with a reputation as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in European football following his move from Chelsea.
However, the 33-year-old was at fault for both goals as West Ham ran out 2-0 victors in our Premier League opener today.
Speaking after the game, Wenger was asked for his thoughts on Cech’s display but refused to single his new No.1 out for criticism and instead chose to lay blame at the collective team performance.
The boss told Arsenal.com:
on Petr Cech…
I haven’t spoken to him yet. I can’t see many individual convincing performances today so it’s difficult to single someone out.
on the goals…
I [haven’t analysed it] yet, no.
on Cech and organisation…
Not only him. We have enough experience at the back. If you look at our back line, I think the youngest age is 30.
Let’s be honest, we’re all hugely disappointed with Cech’s debut. We thought we’d seen the last of goalkeeping howlers like this after signing him.
However, Arsene is right. Collectively we were awful today and there were several players to blame for both goals. Koscielny and Monreal for the first, and The Ox for the second.
We need to put this performance behind us and get a result at Palace next weekend. I’m not concerned about Cech in the slightest as he’s proven to be a top class keeper for over a decade and I’m sure he’ll come back stronger.
