Arsenal eye move to sign Corinthians’ Iago Machado

Arsenal have reportedly expressed their interest in signing Corinthians defender Iago Machado, as per Brazilian outlet Lance.

After winning the Premier League title last term, the Gunners have reinforced several areas of the squad this summer to continue the momentum.

Following William Saliba’s serious back problem, Mikel Arteta has decided to purchase Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa. On the other hand, having sold Christian Norgaard to Everton, Arsenal have upgraded the engine room by signing Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United.

Meanwhile, after letting Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard leave, the North London club have refreshed the attacking department by purchasing Christos Tzolis.

Moreover, they have signed Illan Meslier to add depth to the goalkeeping department. Arsenal have started the new season impressively, winning the first six games across all competitions, including the Community Shield victory over Manchester City.

However, it appears Arsenal have started exploring options with a view to the long-term future and Lance report that Arteta’s side are interested in signing Machado after monitoring his development closely in recent times.

Apart from the Emirates club, Chelsea have also expressed their interest in him, having been impressed by his recent performances for Corinthians.

Machado to Arsenal

The report state that the 17-year-old recently extended his contract with the Brazilian side until 2028 and has a €100m[£86m] release clause for abroad clubs. However, for the Brazilian clubs, the clause is set at around R$66m.

The youngster is a 6ft 2in tall right-footed centre-back by trait but can provide cover in the right-back and defensive midfield positions if needed.

Machado made his Brasileirão Betano debut for Corinthians against Flamengo on Sunday. He is a talented player and possesses high potential. Therefore, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future should they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in January or next summer.

Meanwhile, amid Saliba’s absence, Arsenal currently have Konsa, Ben White, Cristhian Mosquera and Jurrien Timber as options to deploy in the right side of the defence.
