Arsenal considering making a move to sign John Stones

Arsenal are reportedly considering making a move to sign John Stones on a free transfer, as per talkSPORT.

Although the Gunners won the Premier League title last term, they struggled to score goals from open play. As a result, it appears Mikel Arteta has prioritised revamping the frontline this summer.

After letting Leandro Trossard join Besiktas, Arsenal have bought Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge. However, they reportedly want another left-winger as Gabriel Martinelli’s long-term future is currently uncertain, with his existing deal set to expire at the end of next season.

Moreover, the North London club want a new striker and have been heavily linked with a move for Atlético Madrid star Julian Alvarez. But Barcelona are also in this race.

Following Christian Norgaard’s poor performances and Martin Zubimendi’s inconsistent displays last term, Arsenal also want a new midfielder and have identified Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes as a serious option.

However, Arteta is seemingly keen on bolstering the centre-back position following William Saliba’s back injury, with talkSPORT stating that Arsenal are considering signing Stones as a free agent.

But the Emirates club will have to overcome fierce competition to seal the deal as Inter Milan are reportedly leading the race. The Italian giants have already started talks with the player to persuade him to join, while the 32-year-old is open to moving to Italy.

Stones to Arsenal

Amid Saliba’s absence, Arsenal currently have Cristhian Mosquera, Ben White and Jurrien Timber as options to deploy in the right centre-back position.

However, White and Timber have mainly featured as right-backs under Arteta, while both players have struggled with fitness problems in recent months.

On the other hand, Mosquera is still very young and needs time to reach his full potential. Therefore, Arsenal could do with signing a new defender.

Stones, standing at 6ft 2in tall, is an experienced Premier League-proven player and knows Arteta very well, having previously worked together at the Etihad Stadium.

Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to secure his services by defeating other clubs in this race.
