Arsenal eye surprise move to sign Cristian Romero

Arsenal are reportedly interested in sealing a surprise swoop for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero, as per Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport.

The 28-year-old initially joined the Lilywhites from Juventus on loan back in 2021 before the deal became permanent the following year. He has showcased his qualities in the Premier League over the years, helping his side win the Europa League.

Although the Argentinian struggled with fitness problems last campaign, he showcased his productivity, scoring six goals and registering three assists in 32 appearances across all competitions. Moreover, he helped his side keep eight clean sheets.

Alongside impressing in club football, Romero has enjoyed great success on the international level with Argentina, winning a World Cup and two Copa America.

Now, Corriere dello Sport report that after purchasing Jan Paul van Hecke, Roberto De Zerbi doesn’t consider Romero as the first-choice centre-back anymore.

Therefore, Tottenham are open to cashing-in on him for around £43m in this window, with his existing deal set to run until 2029.

Arsenal are interested in the 28-year-old but Chelsea, Barcelona and Inter Milan are also in this race. Despite purchasing Maxence Lacroix, the Blues want another centre-back.

Romero to Arsenal

On the other hand, although Barcelona are considering making a move for Romero, they are struggling with the registration issue.

The report state that Inter are showing the most concrete interest in signing Romero and have already been working to finalise the operation.

Following William Saliba’s recent injury, the Gunners are said to be planning to purchase a new defender and have been linked with several names.

Romero is a 6ft 1in tall right-footed centre-back. He is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, and is efficient in defensive contributions.

He has shown glimpses of his qualities at the highest level in recent years and is currently at the prime stage of his career. Therefore, Romero might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him.

However, considering the fierce rivalry between Arsenal and Tottenham, it is highly unlikely that Spurs will allow Romero to move to the Emirates Stadium.

Nevertheless, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services.
