Arsenal have expressed interest in signing Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer, according to Nicolo Schira.

Over the past three seasons, Tonali has established himself as one of the best midfielders not just in Newcastle’s midfield but in the Premier League.

Even amid a disappointing campaign for the Magpies, who finished 12th, the 25-year-old’s consistency stood out clearly. He featured 53 times across all competitions, including 35 of Newcastle’s 38 Premier League fixtures, contributing three goals and seven assists along the way.

His combative presence in midfield, especially when paired with club captain Bruno Guimarães, has been the cornerstone of Newcastle’s success in recent years, earning widespread plaudits.

After reportedly being a subject of interest from Arsenal in the January transfer window, it appears the Gunners remain poised to sign the midfielder to reinforce their squad.

This is according to Nicolo Schira, who reports that the north London club have expressed interest in signing Tonali this summer.

Tonali’s tenacity in midfield and efficiency on the ball are key qualities that possession-based clubs like to utilise, and it’s no surprise Schira adds that Premier League rivals Manchester City have also shown interest in the 26-year-old

However, Newcastle have proved to be tough negotiators, so a deal won’t be easy, with the Italian journalist revealing that the Tyneside outfit are expected to demand an £86m fee to sanction Tonali’s departure.

Tenacious midfielder

Despite already possessing numerous midfield options, there is still an obvious need for another top-level addition in the centre of the pitch, especially with Christian Nørgaard widely expected to leave, which makes a potential move for Tonali seem very reasonable.

The Italian’s reputation for relentless effort at both ends of the pitch is backed by FOTMOB’s statistics.

In possession, he completed 84.4% of his passes, found a teammate with 71 long balls, and was involved in 32 created chances for Newcastle, while his total of 2,030 touches, 25 of which came inside the opposition box, underline both his box-to-box qualities and his suitability for the possession-based style favoured by Mikel Arteta.

Defensively, he won 107 duels, made 35 tackles and 31 interceptions, recorded 147 recoveries, and racked up 257 defensive actions in total across the season.

Interestingly, Newcastle’s £86m valuation is either similar to, slightly higher than or slightly lower than the valuations of several other Premier League midfielders attracting significant interest this summer.

As a result, it will be interesting to see whether Arsenal prioritises a move for Tonali or explores other midfield alternatives.
