Madueke stars for Arsenal in Palace win with 8.3 rating
Noni Madueke starred for Arsenal in their 2-1 win over Crystal Palace as the Gunners pulled the curtains on what has been an historic Premier League campaign.
Mikel Arteta and Oliver Glasner both fielded heavily rotated line-ups at Selhurst Park ahead of their respective European finals, with Max Dowman among nine changes for Arsenal as he became the youngest starter in Premier League history at 16 years and 144 days.
Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring in the 41st minute before Noni Madueke doubled the lead three minutes after half-time. Jean-Philippe Mateta pulled one back late on, while Yeremy Pino saw a stoppage-time effort disallowed for offside.
The win ended in jubilant scenes as captain Martin Ødegaard lifted the trophy in front of the traveling supporters after full-time.
Having joined from Chelsea last summer in a £52m deal that drew controversy among Arsenal supporters, the versatile winger has now helped secure silverware in his debut season.
He could still add another major honour before the campaign ends, with the Gunners set to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final later this month.
Individually, Madueke has not been a central figure throughout the run, recording eight goals and four assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.
However, his displays when fully fit have been enough to impress Thomas Tuchel, with the former Tottenham Hotspur academy prospect included in England’s 26-man tournament squad ahead of its official announcement on Friday.
Superb performance
Earning an 8.3 rating on FOTMOB, Madueke was arguably Arsenal’s best player on the pitch against Palace, with his inventive runs and dribbles causing Chadi Riad problems.
In his 83 minutes on the pitch, he made 55 touches, including a sky-high 14 in Palace’s box. He also completed three of his five attempted dribbles at a 60% success rate and completed 30 of his 36 passes at an 83% success rate.
He was Mikel Arteta’s main creative outlet upfront, creating three chances, with two of those being two big chances, while taking two shots, one of which led to a goal, and also saw two of his attempted shots blocked by Oliver Glasner’s defence.
Despite the game being a dead rubber tie, the 24-year-old also put in a solid defensive shift to preserve Arsenal’s lead, making one clearance and three recoveries.
However, he was found clutching his hamstring after being substituted in what would be a worrying concern for Arteta with the UEFA Champions League final just five days away.
