Three things we learnt from Arsenal’s win over Bilbao

Arsenal began their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win against Athletic Bilbao. Both goals came from substitutes Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
The first half offered very little attacking threat, with the Gunners finding it hard to break through Bilbao’s compact set-up.
Clear chances were scarce, and Mikel Arteta’s men struggled to test the goalkeeper.
Martinelli eventually broke the deadlock in the second half with a composed finish after racing clear. Soon after, he turned provider, assisting Trossard for the second goal to seal victory.
Here are three key take-aways from the win in Spain:
Defensive strength remains key
One of the defining features of Arteta’s time at Arsenal has been the team’s solid defensive base. Once again, the backline stood strong against Bilbao.
The Gunners are yet to concede from open play this season, with their only goal conceded coming through a free-kick by Dominik Szoboszlai.
That record underlines how difficult it is to break them down.
William Saliba’s absence has not unsettled the side, thanks to Cristhian Mosquera stepping in confidently.
The youngster has formed a dependable partnership with Gabriel Magalhães, while Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori continue to impress both defensively and in support of attacks.
This defensive consistency gives Arsenal the foundation they need to grow in Europe and the league.
Martinelli still very vital to the squad
Despite losing his regular starting place to Eberechi Eze, Gabriel Martinelli remains a crucial figure for Arsenal.
His pace, energy, and directness gave the team much-needed spark when he came on.
Used correctly, he will continue to be an important squad option for Arteta throughout the season.
Bukayo’s Saka position is intact
On the opposite flank, Noni Madueke has provided useful cover in Bukayo Saka’s absence.
However, he is still developing his final product and decision-making in the final third.
Madueke has shown promise with his dribbling and movement but has not yet registered a goal contribution.
Saka’s consistency, creativity, and end product ensure that his position on the right wing is not under threat.
Arsenal’s European journey has started with three points and another clean sheet.
Attention now turns to a crucial Premier League clash with Manchester City at the Emirates on 21 September.
