Arsenal’s pursuit of Piero Hincapie has gained momentum, as reports from Fabrizio Romano suggest the defender has now agreed personal terms.
The Gunners are working to improve their squad depth in preparation for a demanding season across all competitions.
Hincapie is under contract at Leverkusen until June 2029, but wants to leave and has informed the Bundesliga club of his wish.
Mikel Arteta’s team have already added Cristhian Mosquera to their defensive ranks this summer.
With Jakub Kiwior likely to finalise a move to Porto, Arteta is eager to bring in another dependable option.
Hincapie is highly rated by the Arsenal boss, who considers the Ecuadorian international an ideal fit for his backline.
Although Tottenham Hotspur have also shown interest, the 23-year-old is understood to favour a move to the Emirates.
Reports claim Spurs submitted a proposal for the player, but Hincapie’s preference remains firmly with Arsenal.
The Gunners opened talks over a move in recent days and Romano now claims that personal terms have been agreed between Arsenal and Hincapie’s camp. The defender has now said ‘yet’ to the move, as per the journalist.
Transfer details and release clause
According to reports from Florian Plettenberg, Hincapie has a release clause worth £52 million in his Bayer Leverkusen contract.
However, Arsenal’s first offer is expected to involve an initial loan with an obligation to buy, easing financial pressure on the club.
This approach would allow the Gunners to strengthen their defence without committing the full fee upfront.
Hincapie joined Leverkusen from Argentine side CA Talleres in 2021 and has since become one of Europe’s most promising defenders.
He has made 166 appearances for the Bundesliga side, proving his consistency and adaptability in top-level football.
On the international stage, the centre-back boasts 46 caps for Ecuador and has featured in major tournaments for his country.
Despite ongoing speculation, Hincapie has played in both of Leverkusen’s opening matches of the 2025/26 season.
His availability and match fitness make him a prime target as Arsenal seek to conclude the deal swiftly.
A successful move would bolster Arsenal’s defensive options and highlight their ambition to compete strongly on all fronts this season.
The Gunners have already signed seven major new arrivals and it appears Hincapie could be about to be their eighth.
