Arsenal plot swoop for Jules Kounde to strengthen defence

By on April 26, 2025

Arsenal are planning a summer move for Barcelona defender Jules Kounde as they look to strengthen their defence ahead of next season.

According to reports from The Sun, Mikel Arteta is ready to invest in key areas of the squad after another campaign without the league title.

The Gunners are on course to finish second for the third straight season. Liverpool are just one win away from securing the Premier League crown.

One of Arsenal’s biggest problems this season has been squad depth.

Injuries and loss of form have affected their performances, especially in the second half of the campaign.

Sporting director Andrea Berta is expected to work closely with Arteta in the transfer window. Together, they have already drawn up a list of players to target.

Kounde seen as a perfect fit for Arteta’s style

A top priority for Arsenal is to strengthen the backline, and Kounde has now emerged as a leading option.

The 26-year-old France international has been one of the most reliable defenders for Barcelona this season under Hansi Flick.

He is also an important player for the French national team, often trusted in major games.

Kounde can play both as a centre-back and rightback, which makes him a perfect option for Arteta’s system.

Arteta has often used centre-backs in fullback roles. Players like Ben White, Jakub Kiwior, and Jurrien Timber have all featured there.

Kounde’s ability to play in multiple roles would give the manager more flexibility when setting up his defence.

Reports say Barcelona would demand over £55 million for the defender. Arsenal are said to be ready to make an offer if they get the green light.

Kounde’s fitness levels are also a huge plus. Before he was rested against Mallorca, he had played in 104 straight games for Barcelona.

He is expected to feature in the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid later this season.

The defender still has two years left on his contract at Barcelona, and the Spanish side are not keen to lose him.

Arsenal are also looking at other targets. Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen is another name being considered as the club looks to boost defensive depth.
