Arsenal have reportedly registered their interest in signing FC Porto star Alan Varela this summer, as per the Italian outlet TUTTOmercatoWEB.

The Gunners’ desire to reinforce their engine room by purchasing a new midfielder is already well-known. They are said to be looking to replace Thomas Partey – who has been struggling with fitness problems in recent times.

A plethora of strikers have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium over the last few weeks with Douglas Luiz, Amadou Onana and Martin Zubimendi being among them, but Varela is now emerging as a new option.

According to the report by TUTTOmercatoWEB, the player’s agent has revealed that the Argentinian could leave Porto soon with Arsenal keen on signing him.

The report further claims that Porto are fearful that they could lose Varela this summer so they have already started searching for a new midfielder to replace the 22-year-old with Boca Juniors’ Ezequiel Fernandez emerging as a serious option.

Varela to Arsenal

However, the Italian outlet states that purchasing Varela won’t be straightforward for the North London club as Liverpool, Manchester City, and RB Leipzig are also keen on signing him this summer.

The midfielder reportedly has a £60m release clause included in his current deal, therefore, the North London club will have to splash big money to lure him to the Emirates Stadium.

Having joined the Dragons last summer, the youngster still has four years left in his current contract so Porto can stay firm on their valuation to sell their star man.

The South American is a deep-lying playmaker and is extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet. He has the ability to play threading passes between the lines, has an eye for long-range passing and also can contribute defensively as well.

Varela is a highly talented player and possesses the necessary attributes to play in Mikel Arteta’s system. Therefore, he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club can eventually manage to secure his signature in the upcoming transfer window to reinforce their engine room.
