Arsenal are reportedly ‘very interested’ in signing Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi this summer, as per The Athletic.

Having displayed his qualities for his boyhood club over the last few years, the 25-year-old has been attracting a lot of attention from several big clubs around Europe.

Bayern Munich previously expressed their interest in him, but it has been suggested that the Bavarian club were looking at him as Xavi Alonso was willing to sign him. However, after failing to appoint the Spaniard as the new manager and deciding to sign Vincent Kompany to succeed Thomas Tuchel, they have seemingly cooled down their interest in signing him.

According to the report by The Athletic, Arsenal are planning to purchase a new midfielder to play alongside Declan Rice and are ‘very interested’ in Zubimendi.

The report further claims that Mikel Arteta is a ‘keen admirer’ of the Spaniard so the North London club could opt to make a concrete approach to purchase him.

Zubimendi to Arsenal

The Athletic states that Zubimendi has a £50m release clause in his current contract so Arsenal will have to splash a sizable amount of money for him.

However, the article mentions that the Spain international hasn’t expressed his desire to leave his boyhood club, therefore, Arsenal will have to persuade the midfielder to move to the Emirates Stadium.

With Thomas Partey’s future currently uncertain and Mohamed Elneny set to leave the club as a free agent this summer, signing a new midfielder would be the right decision.

Arsenal have already been linked with a plethora of names with Bruno Guimaraes, Douglas Luiz and Amadou Onana being among them but Zubimendi is on their radar as well.

The Real Sociedad star is a technically gifted player and possesses the necessary qualities to play in Mikel Arteta’s system. The Spaniard has flourished under Imanol Alguacil – who also deploys a similar style as Arteta.

So, Zubimendi would be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to secure his signature in the upcoming transfer window to reinforce their engine room.
