Arsenal are reportedly prioritising signing Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi this summer, as per Caught Offside.

It has widely been suggested that after remaining quiet in the winter window, the Gunners are set to splash the cash in the upcoming transfer window to reinforce the squad and help Mikel Arteta achieve success next season.

The North London club are reportedly prioritising strengthening the frontline by signing a new centre-forward but adding reinforcements to the engine room is also on Arteta’s wish-list.

Amadou Onana and Douglas Luiz have been mentioned as serious targets for Arsenal but Zubimendi is on their radar as well. However, according to the report by Caught Offside, although Arsenal ‘appreciate’ Luiz, purchasing the South American seems unrealistic at the moment as Aston Villa are likely to demand a huge fee to let him leave.

So, the report states that Arsenal have identified Zubimendi as a ‘priority’ target as he has a £52m release clause included in his current contract and he would be a like-for-like replacement for Jorginho – who could leave this summer.

Zubimendi to Arsenal

Zubimendi has already showcased glimpses of his qualities in La Liga over the last few years. It has been suggested that having been impressed by his displays, Bayern Munich and Barcelona have also expressed their interest in signing him. However, it appears Arsenal are more keen than their rivals in getting any potential deal done for him.

The Spaniard is extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet, can play threading passes between the lines, is efficient in defensive contributions and also reads the game well. So, Zubimendi could be a shrewd signing for Arsenal if they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to lure him to the Emirates Stadium to reinforce their middle of the park ahead of next season.

Meanwhile, following a disappointing defeat against Aston Villa, Arsenal have lost ground in the title race. They are currently second in the Premier League with 71 points from 32 games, sitting two points behind the league leaders Manchester City.

So, Arsenal will have to lift themselves as quickly as possible before Wednesday’s crucial Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.
