Arsenal eye swoop to sign Girona star Miguel Gutierrez

By on April 9, 2024

Arsenal are reportedly contemplating making a move to sign Girona defender Miguel Gutierrez this summer, as per the Sunday Mirror.

After coming through the Real Madrid youth system, the 22-year-old joined the Catalan side a couple of years ago before establishing himself as a key player in Michel’s starting eleven in recent times.

Girona have surprisingly been mounting a top-four charge in La Liga this term and Gutierrez has been playing a pivotal role in that. So, the defender’s impressive performances in the Spanish top-flight have attracted the attention of several big clubs around Europe with Arsenal among those to have registered their interest.

According to the report by the Sunday Mirror (via TEAMtalk), Arsenal are interested in signing Gutierrez and they have been keeping a close eye on his development before making a potential swoop this summer. The report says scouts have sent back ‘slowing reports’ on the talented defender.

It has been reported that Real Madrid have a buy-back option to bring the Spaniard back to Santiago Bernabéu this summer, but they have reportedly been exploring other options like Alphonso Davies to bolster their left-back position. So, it doesn’t look likely that the Spanish giants will make a move for their academy graduate.

Gutierrez to Arsenal

Gutierrez has a £30m release clause included in his current contract so Arsenal can manage to acquire his service for an affordable price. However, the Sunday Mirror states that Manchester United are also keen on signing him and they have also been monitoring his development in recent times. So, the Gunners are expected to face tough competition from the record Premier League champions in getting any potential deal done for him.

Gutierrez is quick, extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet, can play threading passes between the lines, is efficient going forward and also can create chances for the attackers.

The Spaniard is a talented player and can play the inverted fullback role as Michel uses him in that role at Girona. So, Gutierrez could be an ideal option to play in Mikel Arteta’s system.

However, the 22-year-old lacks physicality and in addition, there is a question mark about his defensive abilities. Nevertheless, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to go forward with a move to sign Gutierrez this summer.
