Arsenal have reportedly received a huge boost in pursuit of Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi, as per the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

It has widely been suggested that the Gunners will look to sign a new midfielder in the upcoming window as a potential replacement for Thomas Partey – who has been struggling with fitness problems over the last few years.

Douglas Luiz and Amadou Onana have been mentioned as serious targets for the North London club with Zubimendi being suggested as a key option as well.

However, it was reported that Bayern Munich and Barcelona were also keen on signing the Spaniard so it seemed Arsenal would face a tough competition in getting any potential deal done for him.

However, writing on X, Romano has reported that Bayern Munich identified Zubimendi as a top target to strengthen the engine room in-case they opted to appoint Xavi Alonso as their new manager. But with the Liverpool legend set to remain at Bayer Leverkusen’s helm beyond the end of this season, the Bavarian club might not make a move for the Real Sociedad star this summer.

Zubimendi to Arsenal

The journalist further claims that Barcelona were also interested in signing Zubimendi but they are currently ‘quiet’ regarding making any potential swoop for the midfielder.

Romano also states that Arsenal have earmarked Zubimendi as a serious target to reinforce their engine room and considering Bayern Munich and Barcelona might not look to go for him, Mikel Arteta’s side could get a clear pathway to lure him to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Romano wrote:

“Understand Martin Zubimendi remains on Arsenal list; and he was on top of Bayern list in case Xabi Alonso was gonna become their new coach. Bayern still appreciate Zubimendi as one of the targets but final decision will be up to next manager. It’s all quiet with Barça.”

It has been suggested that Zubimendi has a £51m release clause included in his current contract so Arsenal will have to splash a big fee to secure the Spain international’s signature this summer.

Zubimendi has already showcased his qualities in La Liga in recent years so he could be a shrewd signing for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club can eventually manage to acquire his service in the off-season.
