Di Marzio confirms Arsenal’s interest in Viktor Gyokeres

Reputed transfer journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has confirmed that Arsenal are interested in signing Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres in the upcoming transfer window.

It has widely been suggested that the Gunners are set to prioritise bolstering their frontline by signing a new proven goal-scorer this summer. Numerous strikers have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium ahead of the upcoming window with Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen being suggested as serious targets, but Gyokeres is reportedly on their radar as well.

Now, speaking on a Swedish outlet FotbollDirekt, Di Marzio has confirmed that Arsenal are interested in signing the former Coventry City star and they could make a concrete approach to acquire his service during the off-season.

Di Marzio says that Sporting could be open to cashing-in on Gyokeres this summer to make the most profit out of his departure and it is highly unlikely he will remain at Jose Alvalade Stadium beyond this term.

The journalist further claims that although AC Milan have been mentioned as potential suitors for Gyokeres, the Italian giants can’t afford to sign the forward – who has a release clause of around £85m.

Gyokeres to Arsenal

Di Marzio states that Arsenal have the financial resources to sign the 25-year-old so Gyokeres might end up joining the North London club this summer. However, the journalist says that Chelsea are also plotting a swoop for the Swedish so the Gunners are set to face fierce competition from their city rivals in getting any potential deal done for him.

Di Marzio said:

“They don’t want to pay that much for him. Only the Premier League clubs can afford him. Chelsea and Arsenal can afford it and Arsenal want him because they need a striker.

“When players do so well in Portugal, the clubs there want to sell the players. They understand when the time is right. For Gyökeres, it is also right to leave and give England another chance after the move from Coventry.”

Gyokeres is a highly talented striker and could be a shrewd signing for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to make a concrete approach to sign the striker.

    Overpriced. Better of paying just £60 million for world class Santiago Gimenez, the mexican international who is on target to scoring 30 goals this season and has scored over 20 goals every year for the past 3 years at all levels. He is still also very young, proven and worth the price tag, unlike the other unproven strikers mentioned that are overpriced and not proven over 3 years to show they are not just one season wonders.

    Gyokerez could be worth a gamble, but you have to question whether he is a one season wonder and at 25, why has he only now started to do well. Maybe his team have some very cleaver players that set up his goals for him and make him look better than what he is, or that the Portuguese league is lower grade than the French league and any of Arsenal’s strikers would score 30 goals there. It is a big gamble at £85 million, but I may be wrong to say Portuguese league is lower than the French league (apologies), and that he is just a late bloomer and will improve further in a better team.
