Arsenal register interest in signing Matthijs de Ligt

By on February 14, 2024

Arsenal have reportedly registered their interest in signing Bayern Munich star Matthijs de Ligt in the upcoming transfer window, as per Football Transfers.

The 24-year-old burst onto the scene after displaying promising performances for Ajax Amsterdam. Having been impressed by the Dutchman’s displays, Juventus decided to purchase him by spending a big fee.

After enjoying a promising couple of seasons with the Italian giants, De Ligt moved to the Allianz Arena during the summer of 2022. The Netherlands international enjoyed a promising campaign for Bayern Munich last campaign but he has found it difficult to break into Thomas Tuchel’s starting eleven this term.

So, speculations surrounding the Dutchman’s future have started to grow ahead of the summer window. It has even been suggested that De Ligt could be open to leaving Bayern Munich having been frustrated with lack of playing time.

Now, according to the report by Football Transfers, Arsenal have expressed their interest in signing De Ligt and they have already held internal discussion over a deal to secure his signature.

However, the report claims that Arsenal haven’t opened any formal talks with the player’s representatives or Bayern Munich to lure him away from the Allianz Arena. So, it remains to be seen whether the North London club decide to make a concrete approach over the coming weeks.

De Ligt to Arsenal

However, Football Transfers states that Man Utd are also keen on signing De Ligt and they are currently in pole position to sign the defender. So, Arsenal are set to face fierce competition from the Red Devils in getting any potential deal done for the former Juventus star.

The Bayern Munich star – valued at around £55m by Transfermarkt – still has more than three years left in his current contract so the Bavarian club are in a strong position to demand a big fee to let their star man leave during the off-season.

De Ligt is a highly talented player. He is strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, efficient in defensive contributions and also reads the game well. So, the Netherlands international could be a shrewd signing for Arsenal to reinforce their backline if they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually opt to formalise their interest in signing De Ligt if he eventually leaves Bayern Munich ahead of the next campaign.
