Arsenal are reportedly contemplating a summer swoop for Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi, as per the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Gunners opted to reinforce their engine room by signing Declan Rice last summer. However, it seems Mikel Arteta wants to purchase a new midfielder as a potential replacement for Thomas Partey following his yet another injury-plagued campaign this season.

Several names have been mentioned as potential targets for the North London club with Douglas Luiz and Amadou Onana being suggested as the primary options. But, Zubimendi is reportedly on their radar as well.

Arsenal have been linked with a move for the Spaniard over the last few transfer windows, however, they haven’t opted to make a concrete approach to sign him yet.

But, speaking to Caught Offside, Romano has reported that things could be different this time around as Arsenal have identified Zubimendi as a serious option to reinforce their engine room this summer.

Zubimendi to Arsenal

However, the journalist states that Mikel Arteta’s side haven’t opened any formal talks with the midfielder over a potential move as the player doesn’t want any distraction and is focused on helping his side achieve their objectives in La Liga and the Champions League this season.

So, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal decide to formalise their interest in signing the midfielder this summer. However, Romano says that purchasing Zubimendi won’t be easy for the Gunners as Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also keen on acquiring his service.

Romano said:

“Martin Zubimendi is on Arsenal, Barcelona and Bayern list for the summer. At the moment, there is nothing more than this as Zubimendi only wants to focus on Real Sociedad and he loves his club. He is fully focused on La Liga and the Champions League, with no distraction at all. It will take time, there is nothing for February or March, despite some talk that Arsenal have already been ‘laying the groundwork’ for this deal.”

It has been suggested that Zubimendi has a £51m release clause included in his current contract so Arsenal will have to spend a big fee to lure the Real Sociedad star to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Zubimendi has already showcased glimpses of his qualities in La Liga in recent years so he would be a shrewd signing for Arsenal if they secure his signature during the off-season.
