Arsenal are reportedly ready to trigger Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong’s release clause to purchase him this year, as per the Spanish outlet Fichajes.

The Gunners have been struggling with injury problems this season with defence being the most affected area. New summer signing Jurrien Timber has been ruled out for almost the majority of this campaign after sustaining a serious knee issue in his Premier League debut.

In addition, Takehiro Tomiyasu has found it difficult to stay fit in recent times. As a result, Ben White has been playing almost every game for Arsenal in the right-back position this season, but he has struggled to showcase his best.

Therefore, it appears the North London club have now decided to strengthen their backline by signing a new right-back with Frimpong now emerging as a serious option.

According to the report by Fichajes, Arsenal are ready to trigger Frimpong’s £35m release clause to acquire his service but Leverkusen don’t want to let their star man leave in January so Mikel Arteta’s side are planning to purchase him at the end of this campaign.

Frimpong to Arsenal

The report further claims that although Real Madrid are showing interest in signing the Dutchman, Arsenal are currently ahead of the Spanish giants in getting any potential deal done for him.

Frimpong has burst onto the scene after enjoying a stellar time with Leverkusen in recent years, scoring seven goals and notching up nine assists in 22 appearances in all competition this season.

Xavi Alonso’s side are currently at the top of the German Bundesliga with 42 points from 16 games, sitting four points clear at the summit. Die Werkself have been showing signs that they could snap Bayern Munich’s league winning streak this term with Frimpong playing a key role for Leverkusen in their quest to achieve that.

Frimpong is a talented defender and possesses the potential to become a top-class player going forward. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him, however, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually opt to formalise their interest in luring the 23-year-old to the Emirates Stadium this year.
