Arsenal ‘very interested’ to sign Romeo Lavia this summer

By on July 3, 2023

Arsenal are reportedly ‘very interested’ in signing Southampton star Romeo Lavia but face a battle to acquire his service as Liverpool have now joined the race, as per the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

It has widely been suggested that Mikel Arteta has prioritised revamping the engine room this summer after transfer-listing Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey.

They have already signed Kai Havertz from Chelsea and are inching closer to purchasing primary target Declan Rice. However, it appears Arsenal are planning to purchase another midfield option before the start of next season with Lavia being mentioned as a serious target.

Writing on Twitter, Romano has reported that Arsenal are ‘very interested’ in signing the 19-year-old this summer and they could make a move for him if Partey leaves the club over the coming days.

The journalist further claims that after failing to stay up in the Premier League, Southampton are ready to let their star man leave this summer and are demanding a fee of around £50m. So, Arteta’s side will have to spend big to acquire his service if they formalise their interest.

Battle

However, Romano has suggested that luring the Belgian international to the Emirates Stadium won’t be straightforward for Arsenal as Liverpool have now also joined the race and are ‘keen’ on securing his signature.

Romano wrote:

“Liverpool are in the race for Romeo Lavia since Monday… and no changes despite Szoboszlai & Mac Allister incoming. Liverpool remain keen on signing Lavia, on list with Thuram. Arsenal, still very interested — but it depends on Thomas exit. Southampton want £50m fee.”

Lavia is dynamic, technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, has an eye for long-range passing and also is efficient in defensive contributions.

The youngster has already showcased glimpses of his talent during a very short spell at Saint Mary’s Stadium. So, he would be a great signing for Arsenal if they purchase him this summer.

However, it will be a huge disappointment for the North London club if they miss out on securing his signature to Liverpool. So, Arsenal should go all out to sign Lavia and beat the Merseyside club in this race.

I struggle to understand why getting Lavia will be a battle, merely because Liverpool is also interested in him. Arsenal are in the champions league, and Liverpool are not.
I think the key issue here is whether Arsenal want him enough to pursue him. The battle is Arsenal vs Arsenal.
