Arsenal are reportedly showing an interest in signing Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio this summer, as per the Spanish outlet Fichajes.

The 27-year-old joined Los Blancos back in 2015 from Mallorca for a fee of around £3m. He was deemed one of the best young talents in Spanish football during the early stages of his Real Madrid career.

However, he never managed to establish himself as a regular starter at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu over the years and along with that, injury issues have hampered his development.

Nevertheless, he has been playing a pivotal role in the Spanish giants’ success in recent years, helping his side in winning three La Liga titles, as many Champions League trophies, four Club World Cups and several other cup competitions.

The Spaniard has entered the final three months of his current contract and hasn’t signed an extension yet. So, it is increasingly likely that he will leave Los Blancos at the end of this season to take a new challenge in his career.

It appears Arsenal are looking to take advantage of this situation and sign the highly talented forward for free to strengthen their attacking department for next season.

Asensio to Arsenal

According to the report by Fichajes, Arsenal are looking to purchase a new right winger to support Bukayo Saka and have earmarked Asensio as an ideal option.

The report further claims that Mikel Arteta has been showing an interest in the Real Madrid star for a very long time as he thinks Asensio would be a perfect option to play in his style of football. So, the Gunners could make a concrete approach to sign him during the off-season.

However, Fichajes also says that Arsenal are set to face tough competition from AC Milan and Barcelona in securing Asensio’s signature as they are also plotting a swoop for him this summer.

The 27-year-old is a right-winger, but can be deployed in the midfield and also as the false nine. He is technically sound, can create chances for fellow attackers, is excellent in link-up play, has an eye for long-range passing, can chip in with some important goals and also excellent in delivering set-pieces.

So, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal if they manage to acquire the Spain international’s service for free at the end of this season.

However, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal decide to formalise their interest in signing Asensio – valued at around £22m by Transfermarkt – should he eventually ends up leaving Real Madrid for free at the end of this season.
