Arsenal are reportedly showing interest in signing Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Alexis Mac Allister in the upcoming January transfer window, as per the Spanish outlet AS.

The 23-year-old joined the Seagulls back in 2019 from Argentinos Juniors for a fee of around £7m. Since joining the club, the midfielder went out on loan twice before establishing himself as a regular starter at the AMEX Stadium.

The youngster enjoyed a stellar start to this campaign ahead of the World Cup hiatus, scoring five goals in 14 Premier League appearances. After displaying promising performances for Brighton this term, the Argentine was rewarded with a call-up to the national team squad for the recently concluded Qatar World Cup.

The 23-year-old continued his domestic form on the international stage as he was an integral part of Lionel Scaloni’s side in overcoming their 36 years of World Cup title drought.

The midfielder started the opening group game defeat against Saudi Arabia on the bench before commencing in every other fixture, scoring a solitary goal and assisting as many times in six appearances.

Alexis Mac Allister to Arsenal

According to the report by AS, after impressing at the highest level, Mac Allister has started to attract attention from big clubs around Europe, with Arsenal being among those to have already registered their interest in signing him this January.

However, the report claims that signing the Argentina international won’t be easy for Mikel Arteta’s side as Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are also lining up a move for Mac Allister.

The youngster – valued at around £28m by Transfermarkt – still has two and a half years left in his current contract plus there is an option to extend the deal for one more year. So, Brighton are in a strong position to ask for a big fee for their star man.

Brighton usually play hardball to sell their assets as Arsenal have already experienced the Seagulls’ resilience whilst signing Ben White during the summer of 2021. Therefore, it will be extremely difficult for Arsenal to prise Mac Allister away from AMEX Stadium this January.

Arteta is reportedly looking to bolster his midfield options to boost Arsenal’s title charge after the New Year and Mac Allister would be a terrific signing. However,  but it’s highly unlikely that Roberto De Zerbi’s side will allow their key first-team member to leave the club in mid-season unless they receive an offer too good to turn down.
