Arsenal eyeing Borussia Monchengladbach ace Marcus Thuram

Marcus Thuram

Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a move for Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram, as per the Italian outlet Milan News.

The 25-year-old joined the Bundesliga side back in 2019 from French club Guingamp for a fee of around £9m. After an injury-plagued season last term, the Frenchman has enjoyed a brilliant start to this campaign, scoring nine goals and registering three assists in 14 league appearances.

The Gunners have seemingly been keen on strengthening their forward line in the upcoming January transfer window. They have already been linked with several attackers, with Mykhaylo Mudryk appearing to be their priority target.

According to the report by Milan News, Arsenal have also shown interest in purchasing Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram. But, the Gunners will have to overcome the challenges of other European clubs in order to sign the France international, given AC Milan, Atlético Madrid, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are also lining up a move for him.

The Frenchman is valued at around £20m by the Transfermarkt and his current contract with the German club is set to expire at the end of this campaign. So, the north London club could broker a cut-price deal for the forward this winter or sign him for free at the end of this season, if the 25-year-old doesn’t renew his contract.

Marcus Thuram to Arsenal

Marcus Thuram could be a useful option for Arsenal. He is a centre forward by trait but can play on either flank. So, the ex-Guingam man would be an ideal option for Mikel Arteta’s side, if he were to join the club, given the forward would be able to deputise for both Gabriel Martinell and Bukayo Saka, while he can also cover up for Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah in the striker position if needed.

Therefore, the Borussia Monchengladbach man would be a wise purchase for the north London club as they appear to be actively looking to reinforce their flanks this January, and his price tag shouldn’t be a big factor to get this deal over the line.

However, previously Mikel Arteta stated that they are keen on signing players who are at a different level, and Marcus Thuram might not fit into that profile.

Therefore, although the France international could be a useful squad player for Arsenal, he would not be a regular starter and might even struggle to push the first-choice options for the first-team places, if the Gunners sign him up in winter. With that in mind, I think focusing on the other targets to strengthen the flanks could be a better decision for the Emirates outfit this winter.
