Sandro Tonali

Arsenal have reportedly identified AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali as the alternative option if they fail to secure a deal for their top target Youri Tielemans, as per the Daily Star.

Despite already securing five major signings this summer, the Gunners are seemingly not looking to halt their transfer spree yet and midfield and the flanks are the two areas where they are actively looking to add more firepower before the window closes.

Tonali has emerged as a potential target for the north London club. The 22-year-old joined the Rossoneri back in 2020 on an initial loan deal from Brescia before securing his permanent switch to Stefano Pioli’s side in the following summer.

The Italian international has established himself as a regular starter at the Giuseppe Meazza since joining the club and played a key role in AC Milan’s title charge last season, scoring five goals and notching up two assists in 36 league appearances.

As per the Daily Star, Arsenal are set to test Leicester City’s resilience by ‘submitting an official bid’ for Tielemans this week but the Foxes are a hard negotiator and ‘a deal between the two sides is far from a guarantee’.

Therefore, the outlet states that if Mikel Arteta’s side fail to find an agreement with the Foxes regarding a deal for Tielemans then the Gunners have lined up AC Milan ace Sandro Tonali as a fall-back option.

Tonali is Arsenal’s Tielemans alternative

Tonali – who is deemed to be one of the best young midfielders in Serie A and around the world – still has four years remaining in his current contract with the Rossoneri and is valued at around £45m by the Transfermarkt.

So, AC Milan would not allow their star player to leave for cheap and Arsenal will have to spend big in order to land the 22-year-old at the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Meanwhile, Tielemans would come for much less money, given the Leicester man has less than 12 months remaining in his current contract. On top of that, the Belgian would be a Premier League proven midfielder and therefore, he would be a less risky choice for Arteta’s side.

Therefore, I think Arsenal should go all out for Tielemans. If Leicester stay firm on their £30m valuation then the Gunners should pay that sum and sign the 25-year-old. Arteta desperately needs more additions to his midfield department and the Leicester man would be a great acquisition for the Spanish boss’ side.
