Arsenal’s preparations ahead of the Premier League restart suffered a set-back today after we slumped to a shock 3-2 defeat to Brentford in a friendly at the Emirates this afternoon.
Coming in to the game off the back of a 6-0 win over Charlton at the weekend – which saw Eddie Nketiah score a hat trick – we came back to earth with a bump following today’s surprise defeat to Championship outfit Brentford.
Mikel Arteta fielded a strong side for the game at the Emirates with the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette, Bukayo Saka, Sokratis, Nicolas Pepe, Hector Bellerin and Gabriel Martinelli all getting important minutes under their belts.
Granit Xhaka and Reiss Nelson also featured in the game along with Rob Holding while Kieran Tierney also got a run out as he continued his search for full fitness following an injury-plagued campaign.
However, despite a whole host of first team regulars playing and Arsenal taking a first half lead, we slumped to a 3-2 loss after conceding three times to Brentford in the second period.
The good news is Joe Willock and Lacazette were both on the score-sheet but obviously this loss isn’t ideal considering we’ll be heading to defending champions Manchester City when football returns in a week’s time.
Arsenal currently sit ninth in the table following a disastrous season so we desperately need a positive result at the Etihad next Wednesday if we’re to stand a chance of snatching a European qualification place.
