From Spain: Arsenal ready to meet £88m release clause to sign world class Star
According to Spanish outlet AS, Arsenal are prepared to meet Jan Oblak’s £88m release clause and offer the Atletico Madrid keeper a new challenge here in the Premier League.
There is no doubt a new number one should be a priority for which ever manager is in charge this summer as speculation continues over Arsene Wenger’s future following another poor campaign.
Petr Cech turns 36 in May and his form has steady been declining over the past two years so his best days are behind him and we need to bring in a long-term replacement this summer.
A number of players have been linked in recent weeks but Oblak has emerged as a shock target and AS claim that Raul Sanllehi, our new ‘director of football’, is determined to land the Madrid stopper.
The Spanish publication says Arsenal chiefs are prepared to meet his £88m release clause and offer him a new start in London but we could yet face competition from Liverpool.
Oblak has developed in to one of the best goalkeepers in the world since joining Atletico from Benfica in 2014 and he’s conceded just 12 goals in 28 La Liga games so far this season – with 18 clean sheets.
Compare that to Arsenal, Cech has shipped 41 Premier League goals with 10 clean sheets in his 30 appearances and there is no doubt Oblak would be a significant upgrade.
The 25-year-old is world class and he’s exactly the type of goalkeeper we need to be signing if we’re to challenge for top trophies again but it’s going to be an extremely difficult deal to pull off.
No doubt Atletico will do all they can to hold on to him and I highly doubt Oblak would agree to leave them if we can’t offer Champions League football next season so we better pray we can win the Europa League.
