According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are ready to sell Mesut Ozil abroad in January to prevent him making a free transfer move to Manchester United next summer.

Ozil looks set to leave the Emirates Stadium after failing to agree terms over a new contract and the playmakers current deal is due to expire next June.

The club felt it was a good idea to allow Ozil to head in to the new season without committing to the club and predictably it’s been a disaster as he’s produced some woeful displays in recent months.

Reports earlier this week suggested some of Ozil’s team mates have grown tired of his lack of enthusiasm so it will take a dramatic turn of events for the German international to stay at Arsenal.

The Daily Mail are one of several newspapers to report today that Ozil has told friends he wants to join Man Utd next summer and believes Jose Mourinho is keen to take him to Old Trafford on a free transfer.

The pair enjoyed a close relationship during their time together at Real Madrid and Mourinho has previously described Ozil as the best No.10 in the world so it wouldn’t be a shock if the United boss was interested in snapping him up.

However, the Mail claim that Arsenal will look to prevent Ozil from joining our rivals for nothing by trying to sell him abroad during the January transfer window.

Interest in Ozil has been minimal due to his wage demands but the newspaper says Arsenal are confident they will find a buyer this winter with Inter Milan recently confirming their interest in the attacker.

Wenger will not want to lose Ozil to his old foe Mourinho and it’s clear from his performances so far that the player isn’t going to give 100% during the final year of his deal, so I’d welcome us selling him in January.

The problem is, Ozil can simply refuse to leave this winter and hold out to join any club he wants [including United] when he becomes a free agent next summer.

However, it could get messy, as Arsenal could threaten to freeze Ozil out of the team during the second half of the season if he doesn’t leave – which would affect his chances of securing a starting role for German at the World Cup.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this all plays out but the fact is Arsenal have only got themselves to blame for this mess. We should never have let Ozil or Sanchez come in to this season with just one year left on their deals.
