[Player Ratings] Watford 2-1 Arsenal: Ozil the villain for wasteful Gunners

There was controversy at Vicarage Road as Watford came from a goal down to score a late winner and secure a 2-1 victory over a sloppy Arsenal side this evening.

We opened the scoring through a Per Mertesacker header but Watford drew level in the 71st minute from the penalty spot when Richarlison conned the referee with a blatant dive.

Deeney made it 1-1 before Tom Cleverely stole the three points in stoppage time as he slammed home a loose ball – but again replays showed a Watford player was offside in the build-up.

Here are my ratings:

Cech  6/10 | Nowhere near the penalty once again. Will he ever save a penalty? Nothing he could do for the winner.

Koscielny  7/10 | We went to pieces at the back when he limped off late on. Let’s pray he hasn’t aggravated his Achilles again.

Mertseacker  7/10 | A wonderful goal to put us ahead and did his best to prevent the winner but to no avail.

Monreal  6/10 | Steady but was given a tough time by the Watford attack at times.

Bellerín  6.5/10 | Unfortunate with the penalty but he shouldn’t have even stuck his leg out in the first place.

Elneny  6/10 | Worked hard but once again he just didn’t offer enough. No idea why he started ahead of Wilshere.

Xhaka  6/10 | Inexplicably stood and watched Cleverley fire home the winner. He didn’t even try and get back to prevent it. Made some good passes though.

Kolašinac  6.5/10 | Another encouraging display down the left. Got in to some promising positions.

Iwobi  6.5/10 | Missed a decent chance to make it 2-0. Had some nice touches but just doesn’t offer the same threat as Sanchez/Ozil.

Welbeck  6/10 | Didn’t look 100% fit to me but still put in an honest shift.

Lacazette  6/10 | Some nice link-up play at times but didn’t look like he really fancied the dirty side in a tough away game.

Subs:

Ozil  5/10 | Wasted a golden chance to make it 2-0 and win the game. Huge miss.

Giroud 5/10 | Couldn’t hold the ball up to relieve some pressure on the back four.

So another nightmare away performance and while we can blame the officials for the dodgy goals, we only have ourselves to blame. We had the chances to put the game to bed and Ozil should certainly have buried his chance to make it 2-0. Red Star in the Europa League up next…

Özil here, Özil there… yes, it doesn’t go well, it’s Özil’s fault and basta.
