Arsenal ready to battle Spurs over £30m star, player wants move

By on May 9, 2017

According to the Telegraph, Arsenal are ready to battle-it-out with Tottenham over the signing of Riyad Mahrez with the £30m-rated attacker looking to leave Leicester this summer.

The Algerian international became a house hold name after playing a key role in helping Leicester shock the world by lifting the Premier League trophy last season.

His sensational form led to strong interest from Arsenal last summer and we reportedly did all we could to lure him to the Emirates but he opted to stay at the King Power to play in their maiden Champions League campaign.

Understandably, Mahrez has struggled to replicate the kind of form he showed in 2015/16 but he has still shown flashes of brilliance, especially in Europe.

The Telegraph claim the 26-year-old has decided he wants to leave Leicester and expects the club to honour an agreement they struck last summer that would allow him to move-on at the end of this season.

Basically, it seems Mahrez agreed to stay with the Foxes for one more season and lead them in to the Champions League in return for a bumper new contract and the promise he could leave in summer of 2017 if he wanted.

The attacker has decided he wants out of the King Power and the Telegraph claim Arsenal will now renew their interest but we’ll face competition from Tottenham and maybe even Chelsea.

Leicester will no doubt be reluctant sellers but the newspaper says they will cash-in if a fee of around £30m is put on the table – which is around £10m less than we were reportedly prepared to pay last summer.

I think Mahrez would be a great signing, particularly if we could get him back to the kind of form we saw from him last summer, but I think we might struggle if we can’t offer him Champions League football.

He’s had a taste of it this season and no doubt he’ll want to be part of it again next year so unless we somehow manage to sneak fourth, I personally don’t see us signing Mahrez this summer.
