Arsenal open talks to sign Sporting’s Morten Hjulmand
Arsenal have reportedly opened talks to sign Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand, as per Caught Offside.
The Gunners currently have Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, and Christian Norgaard as options for the deeper midfield positions.
However, Merino has been out injured over the last few months, while Norgaard has found it difficult to play regularly since joining from Brentford last summer.
Zubimendi displayed impressive form during the first half of this season but has shown inconsistency in recent weeks. As a result, Mikel Arteta has used Myles Lewis-Skelly in the engine room alongside Rice.
Although Norgaard moved to the Emirates Stadium last summer, he signed a short-term contract and is set to turn 33 next year. So, it appears the North London club have already started exploring options to replace the Dane.
Caught Offside claim that Arsenal are planning to replace the former Brentford star with his compatriot Hjulmand after being impressed by his displays at Jose Alvalade Stadium.
The Gunners held talks with Sporting over a potential move for Hjulmand when the two clubs met in the Champions League quarter-finals last month.
Hjulmand to Arsenal
However, Arsenal will have to overcome stiff competition to finalise the operation, as Manchester United are also interested in him and have made contact to learn about the details of signing him.
On the other hand, Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus, and Atlético Madrid have also expressed their interest in him. Manchester City have earmarked Hjulmand as a potential alternative option if they eventually fail to sign Elliot Anderson.
The 26-year-old is set to enter the final two years of his current contract, and considering Sporting are a selling club, they are open to letting him leave this summer to make the most profit out of his departure.
The midfielder has a £69m release clause in his current contract, but the Lions are open to accepting around £52m.
Hjulmand is a defensive midfielder by trait but is also efficient in the box-to-box role. He is dynamic, technically sound, tidy with possession, and also efficient in defensive contributions.
Hjulmand is a talented player and could be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they eventually manage to secure his service by defeating other clubs in this race.
