Spurs Star: I’m Not As Good As Ozil But It’s Cool To Be Compared

By on September 17, 2013

New Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen has admitted what we all knew already – that he’s not as good as Arsenal star Mesut Ozil.

Eriksen and Ozil made their debuts for their respective new clubs on Saturday and both impressed, bagging an assist each as they helped their clubs to victories. This led to ridiculous comparisons of the two players, with some so-called journalists claiming that Eriksen was in fact the better buy as he only cost around a quarter of what had paid for Ozil.

Predictably this resulted in extensive debate on social media sites between Arsenal and Tottenham fans. Some deluded Spurs fans jumped on the bandwagon claiming Eriksen was as good as Ozil, while the more level-headed supporters distanced themselves from such laughable claims.

Well the player himself has now come out and settled the score, playing down comparisons with the German super-star and admitting he has a long way to go until he reaches the dizzy heights set by the former Real Madrid man.

The Danish youngster, like a star-struck teenager, even admitted it was ‘pretty cool’ for him to be compared with such a ‘big player’. He told the Mirror.

“I think Ozil has achieved a little bit more than me! I am a few years younger and still have to learn a lot but it is nice to be compared.

“From what I have heard, it is not good to be compared with Arsenal players! But really, it is pretty cool to be compared with such big players.”

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Eriksen fan and believe he’ll turn into an excellent player. I was gutted when the scum signed him. But he’s 21 and is nothing more than potential right now.

Ozil is the real deal. He’s played for Real Madrid – arguably the biggest club in the world – for three years and was widely regarded as the best playmaker on the planet before he joined Arsenal. Eriksen has one decent game outside of Holland and suddenly he’s on par with him? Do me a favour.

At least the former Ajax youngster is clever enough to realise how ridiculous it is to compare him with Ozil. Sadly the same can’t be said for some Spurs fans.

What do you make of the Eriksen-Ozil comparisons?

He’s nothing but potential… except he provided an assist in his first game. So he’s already delivering on that potential, so he’s not “just” potential.

Arsenal smashed their transfer record for a fantastic attacking midfielder when they needed a striker, CB or DM. Spurs paid a quarter of that for a fantastic attacking midfielder to fill the one position they still needed.

Arsenal got the better player, Spurs got the better deal.

Proved himself after one game? Please. Just think about what you’re saying. He’s a 21-year-old kid who’s got bags of potential but proved nothing yet. Countless players have been worldies playing in Holland only to flop when they move up to a better league, so let’s not get too ahead of ourselves with Eriksen.

Whether Arsenal needed Ozil or not is a moot point. He’s world class and EVERY team needs world class players. Has he improved us? Yes. Is he worth £42.5m in today’s market. Easily.

The Eriksen deal was certainly a great piece of business for Spurs but you get what you pay for. You paid £11m and got potential. We paid £42.5m and got world class pedigree.

what a childish article – my daddys bigger than your daddy.. moron, grow up. 42 million for ozil is a ridiculous bit of business, 12 million for eriksen is a fantastic bit of business. who is better remains to be seen…

ha ha ha. You say it is a rediculous article and then immediately take part in the debate. Given prices for players, I cant say c.£40m is that bad for Ozils pedigree.

What a stupid article. And i’m an Arsenal fan.

Obviously he’s not as good as Ozil, but Eriksen is quality and at 11m and aged 21 is just as good a buy as Ozil if not better.

Get over it, websites post articles like that to try and get hits from people basically going on there to comment on how ridiculous the article is and to defend their club or in this case player. Of course Eriksen is not as good as Ozil but he is only 21. People like you make the point that he is only proven in the dutch league but so was Suarez. Eriksen has already proven in his first game that he is a class act.

Im sure there were some childishly deluded spurs fans saying he is as good as Ozil but every club has them, for example the Arsenal fans who think you can win the league every season despite not buying players for the positions you desperately need them in, and the ones who think Ozil is as good as or better than Bale. Maybe I should write an article about them.

Spot on Paul, back and forth banter is what a rivalry is made of…. whether Arsenal fans want to admit it or not Spurs are right up there maybe not challenging just yet, but neither are Arsenal!! good start for both though.

    • mac14

      September 17, 2013 at 1:26 pm

Yeah, Suarez was class in Holland and came to England to prove himself. He’s done that and is now regarded as a world class striker. But he still came to England with it all the prove. Same goes for Eriksen. If he does the business for 2/3 years here then we can talk, but for now he is still a kid with great potential. That’s all I’m saying.

“Eriksen has already proven in his first game that he is a class act.” Seriously? After one game he’s proven himself?! Please….

Same could be said for Özil, he has been great in team full of galacticos, surrounded by class on and off the field, , you would have to be David Bently not to look good around such players (German squad too) and we’re talking about a league that has 2 likely contenders year on year, you can’t tell me that Özil doesn’t still need to prove himself against real competition.

      • Paul

        September 17, 2013 at 10:00 pm

What I meant was he was class in that game. His first premier league game in a team he has never played with before and he turns in a man of the match performance is a pretty promising sign that he will be a success.

    I’m an arsenal fan.
Ok deluded spuds i agree £42m for ozil is not a great business compared to £12m for eriksen But come to think of it We actually paid £5m for ramsey who is currently better than the so called paulinho you broke your sh*t transfer record for and £0 for jack who is on par with eriksen if not better… Hehehehehe looks like we got the better deal here. I know some would wana say so ramsey is better than jack now, If you have a brain you won’t ask.
Fact is we have gotten somany bargain buys in the past e.g
    ramsey = £5m
giroud = £12m (that awkward moment when i realized soldado cost around £26m)
    santi = £16m
nof said…oh and i got flamini for £0 So i don’t see why we should’nt overpay for once. LoL deluded spuds. You pay more for higher quality right? I think we did just that by signing ozil

    • Wes

      September 17, 2013 at 2:01 pm

Hows this for a Bargain buy:
      Gareth Bale 7m
      Vertonghen:6m
Capoue (that Wenger desperately wanted) 8m

Oh and Ramsey better that Paulinho …really???…the rd best player at the ecent confed cup behind Neymar and Iniesta!!…you sir are deluded, He is adjusting to Prem league same as every import in the history of football……..Previgo you joke!!!

ramsay and wilshere spend more time on the sick bed than playing – fact is they’ll both be injured again soon and ozils gonna take a few kicks so who comes in as cover? arse have a good first 11 but they are injury prone, spurs have a quality squad in depth… perhaps old wenger would have been wiser spending the 42 million on 3 – 4 decent players instead of a one off rip off on ozil

    • Paul

      September 17, 2013 at 9:57 pm

So what is your point exactly? Arsenal have made some bargain deals? cool.

      Bale 10m sold for 85
      Modric 16 sold for 35
      Berbatov 10 sold for 30
      Carrick 2.5 sold for 18
      Lennon 2
      Sandro 8
      Capoue 8

And now Eriksen. We do alright too.

    September 17, 2013 at 1:59 pm

Eriksen is humble enough to say how nice it is to be compared,so he understands he still has some way to go,I think we can judge who`s better
value at the end of the season, I remember Arshavin in his first game at liverpool look how that ended, the fact arsenal fans feel the need to print this article shows there is an argument and it remains to be seen the outcome

ozil will have cost the stupid goons 80million after his wages have been paid in 5 years time and he will have no sell on value… eriksen on the other hand cost 12million and his wages no where near ozils… dont be daft goonscum, eriksen is by far the better deal…fcuking idiots

  16. Facts

    September 17, 2013 at 4:31 pm

the only reason the pathetic goons spent 42 million on one player was to please their fans, now they can say their most expensive player cost more than Spurs most expensive. Stupid business but it worked, their fans bought it hook line and sinker. But you gotta look at the big picture, Tottenham destroyed the goons in the transfer window spending over 100 million. Have goons ever spent that much? Have goons ever sold a player for 85 million? lol@goonidiots. You got mugged by the board bigtime, no nothing fools.
