Wenger to decide on midfielder move, deal to be confirmed in 24 hrs

By on January 24, 2017

According to a report in the Daily Star, Arsene Wenger is set to make a final decision over whether to loan Gedion Zelalem to VVV-Venlo with a decision to be made within the next 24 hours.

Zelalem was once heralded as a future star at the Emirates after joining the club in 2013 but he’s struggled to force his way in to Wenger’s first team plans and is yet to make a single appearance in the Premier League.

The midfielder spent a reasonably successful season on loan at Rangers last season but he’s still found it difficult to make an impression at Arsenal this year with a couple of fleeting appearances in the EFL Cup the best we’ve had from him.

Zelalem’s contract is due to expire in the summer but he’s been in talks over an extension and it appears the club are hoping to tie him down to fresh terms before sending him out on loan for the rest of the season.

The Daily Star claim that we’ve been negotiating with VVV-Venlo about a six-month loan and Wenger is due to make a final decision over the potential deal within the next 24 hours.

I have a feeling that if this deal goes through then we could see the teenager commit his future to Arsenal before linking up with the Dutch second division side, otherwise what would be the point in us sending him on loan for the final six months of his deal?

Surely we’d be better off keeping him at the club and hoping to persuade him to stay, or just selling him now to get at least a nominal transfer fee?

It’s a tricky situation as so far Zelalem has failed to show he’s got what it takes to make it at a club like Arsenal but Wenger clearly sees something in him and is hoping he’ll eventually develop in to the player he think he can be.

Maybe we’ll give him one more contract and see how he progresses over the next 18 months and if he doesn’t develop, then we’ll look to cash in.
