“I Would Say Yes” – €44m Hitman Confirms He Wants Arsenal Move
Jackson Martinez has opened the door to a move to Arsenal after telling reporters that he supported us as a child and would jump at the chance of making the switch to north London.
Martinez has been widely reported as one of Arsene Wenger’s main transfer targets as he looks to bring in a top class striker to offer support to Olivier Giroud next season.
Newspapers claimed last week that the boss was giving serious consideration to triggering the 27-year-old’s €44m (£35m) buy-out clause and some reports even suggested that we had opened formal talks with Porto over a potential deal.
Martinez has now hinted that talks are underway and revealed that he supported Arsenal as a child and would ‘say yes’ if a move was on the table. However, any deal will have to wait until after the World Cup as he prepares to take on hosts Brazil on Friday.
“I know that there have been discussions, but still no agreements.
“My agent is taking care of my future, right now I’m at the World Cup and only after the World Cup I’ll evaluate proposals.
“As a child I cheered for Arsenal, they play a game that suits me. If I had the occasion to play there, I would say yes.” Martinez is quoted as in the Express
Martinez has an excellent goal-scoring record for Porto, bagging 60 goals in just 91 games since moving there in 2012, so he’d certainly bring a real threat to our attack if we did sign him.
However, £35m seems a lot for a player who has yet to really prove himself outside of Portugal and for that kind of money, there may be better value around. If we could get the fee down to nearer £25m, then he’d be a decent purchase but I’d personally pass if Porto demand the full £35m.
