REPORT: Wenger & Mertesacker Agree New Deals, Sagna Still Stalling
Some very interesting news circulating this morning with reports claiming that Arsene Wenger and Per Mertesacker have both agreed new deals at Arsenal.
The bosses current contract expires at the end of the season and he’s been in talks with the club about an extension over the past couple of months.
Some journalists and pundits have been suggesting Wenger wanted to see how the team had progressed this year before deciding whether he’s still got what it takes to carry on or whether he would call-time on his 18-year reign in charge.
With the team currently topping the Premier League, it appears he’s got the answer he needs, and the Daily Star claim the Frenchman has now agreed terms over a new deal but official confirmation is being delayed as the club want to announce a triple signing along with Mertesacker and Sagna.
We did something similar back in November 2012 when we announced that Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, Kieron Gibbs and Carl Jenkinson had all signed new deals.
The newspaper states that Per has also agreed terms over a new two-year extension that will tie him to the club until 2017, but the announcement is being held up with Sagna continuing to stall over his future.
The right-back is out-of-contract in the summer and while Arsenal are offering him a two-year deal on the same £70,000-a-week he’s on now, he has better offers from the likes of PSG, Monaco and Galatasaray – who are understood to be ready to offer him a four-year contract worth £100,000 AFTER tax.
It’s obviously great news that Wenger and Mertesacker have agreed new deals. They both certainly deserve it. But I really hope we manage to persuade Sagna to commit his future to the club as well. He’s been excellent this season and we’ll find it extremely difficult to replace him.
Let’s hope for some good news soon, and then we can concentrate on bringing in that striker who’s going to lead us to the title 😉
