Arsenal plotting swoop to sign exciting Rangers starlet Kai Urban
Arsenal are plotting a swoop to sign highly rated Scottish fullback Kai Urban from Rangers, according to Football Insider.
Arsenal are embarking on a major academy restructuring after several seasons of inconsistent performances and results.
The 2025-26 season proved particularly difficult for the Gunners across all three age groups. Their U21s finished 14th in the regular-season standings, missing out on the Premier League 2 play-offs before also exiting the EFL Trophy after finishing bottom of their group.
The U18s endured a similarly disappointing campaign, placing 10th in the U18 Premier League South and bowing out of the FA Youth Cup in the round of 32. At U19 level, Arsenal could not progress beyond the group stage of the UEFA Youth League.
The disappointing returns have accelerated plans to overhaul the club’s youth setup. One of the most significant developments was the arrival of Pascal De Maesschalck from Strasbourg as academy director, replacing Per Mertesacker, who left the role at the end of last season, with work already underway.
Now, according to Football Insider, Arsenal are plotting a swoop to sign highly rated Scottish fullback Urban from Rangers.
Urban is one of Rangers’ most promising prospects, and his displays while coming through the ranks have piqued the interest of several clubs, including Arsenal, according to the report.
Prospect
The North Londoners are now keen on recruiting the exciting right-back for their academy setup as they look to amass some of the best young players in the UK for their academy, Football Insider adds.
Arsenal’s academy still requires significant investment. However, the U16s have been the only real shining light in the club’s youth setup, winning the Premier League National Tournament last season and the Premier League Cup the previous season. Urban is expected to join that age group if a deal is agreed.
However, it’s a different story for the other age grades who are currently enduring poor form. The U21s, who last won the Premier League 2 Division One title in 2017/18, have yet to win any games this season and currently sit in 25th place in the Premier League 2 table.
The U18s, on the other hand, have been impressive this season, sitting in fifth place and just two points behind first-placed Chelsea. Still, it’s been up to two decades since they won silverware, with the last being the 2009-10 Premier Academy League.
More worrying are the U19s, who currently sit in 23rd place on the UEFA Youth League table and risk elimination after losing their last game 1-0 to Czech side Slavia Prague.
With administrative changes already underway, recruiting promising talents like Urban would be ideal for making the youth ranks more competitive, but whether Rangers would be open to selling one of their best assets remains to be seen.
