Arsenal make contact to sign Real Sociedad’s Jon Martín

Arsenal have reportedly made contact to sign Real Sociedad defender Jon Martín, as per Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.

After coming through La Real’s youth system, the 20-year-old made his first team debut in 2024. Initially, he took time to adapt to the top-level football before featuring regularly last campaign.

In 32 appearances across all competitions, the youngster scored twice and kept four clean sheets. Moreover, he helped his side win the Copa del Rey by defeating Atletico Madrid in the final.

After being impressed by Martin’s performances, Luis De La Fuente handed him his international debut for Spain in a friendly game vs Iraq earlier this summer. However, he eventually failed to secure his place in La Furia Roja’s World Cup-winning squad.

Now, while citing and translating the print version of Mundo Deportivo, Sport Witness report that apart from being impressed by Martin’s recent eye-catching performances, Arsenal have expressed their interest in signing him.

They have even made contact to learn about his availability. Apart from the Premier League champions, Real Madrid and Barcelona are also in this race, while the record European champions have enquired about him.

Martin has been tempted by Arsenal, but he has decided to continue his development at Reale Arena by signing a fresh term until 2032. Real Sociedad have even included a £51m release clause in his current contract.

Martin to Arsenal

Martin is a 6ft 1in tall right-footed centre-back. He is quick, technically sound, comfortable playing out from the back, good in the air, reads the game well and is efficient in defensive contributions.

Following William Saliba’s back injury, Arsenal currently have Cristhian Mosquera as the only option to deploy in the right centre-back position.

Jurrien Timber and Ben White can provide cover in this position if needed, but Mikel Arteta has mainly used them as right-backs. Moreover, White has had numerous fitness problems in recent months.

Martin is a talented player and possesses high potential. So, he would have been a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal had they managed to purchase him.

It is going to be interesting to see who the North London club eventually buy this summer to bolster the backline.
