Arteta pushing Arsenal hard to sign Bruno Guimaraes
Mikel Arteta is reportedly pushing Arsenal hard to sign Newcastle United star Bruno Guimarães, as per transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Gunners already have Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice, Christian Nørgaard and Myles Lewis-Skelly as options to deploy in the deeper midfield positions.
However, Norgaard failed to break into Arteta’s starting line-up last term. He joined from Brentford on a short-term contract last summer, and it appears Arsenal have already started exploring options to replace him.
Now, on his YouTube channel, Romano states that Arteta is a ‘big fan’ of Guimarães and is pushing hard to lure him to the Emirates Stadium. But the Magpies have no intention of letting him leave, having already sold Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali this summer.
Arsenal have already launched a formal £55m bid to finalise the operation, with his existing deal set to run until 2028, but the Tyneside club have turned down the proposal.
The Gunners hold a long-standing interest in the Brazilian international and are hoping to finally secure his services, having won the Premier League title last term.
Romano said:
“Obviously, Newcastle sold Sandro Tonali, Newcastle sold Anthony Gordon, so now Newcastle don’t have any intention to let Bruno Guimarães go. At the same time, Arsenal had been rejected, £55m.
“Mikel Arteta is a big fan of the player, so what I can tell you, in addition to all of this, is that he really, really likes the player. Mikel Arteta was driving this interest for Bruno Guimaraes internally.”
Guimarães to Arsenal
Since moving to St James’ Park from Olympique Lyonnais, the 28-year-old has proven his worth in England over the last few years, helping his side win the Carabao Cup.
After displaying impressive performances in the Premier League, he has secured his place in the Brazilian national team’s starting line-up, helping his country reach the World Cup last-16.
Guimarães, valued at around £60m by Transfermarkt, is a versatile player as he can play anywhere across the middle of the park. He is currently at the prime stage of his career, so he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to lure him away from St James’ Park during this offseason.
