Arsenal make enquiries to sign Maxi Araujo from Sporting

By on May 25, 2026

Arsenal have made enquiries over the possibility of signing Sporting left-back Maxi Araujo in the summer, according to Ekrem Konur.

Araujo started his career with Wanderers in Uruguay before later moving to Mexican side Puebla, with the defender only making the switch to Europe during the summer of 2024.

Throughout his first campaign with Sporting, he was mainly deployed as a left wing-back and produced a notable creative contribution, ending the season with eight assists.

While naturally suited to a left-back role, his adaptability allows him to operate further forward, including on the wing or in attacking midfield positions, making it understandable why Arsenal are reportedly monitoring him closely.

The 26-year-old has continued impressing in both domestic and European competitions. In league action, he has featured 29 times while registering five goals together with four assists, in addition to contributing three goals in 11 UEFA Champions League starts and another assist in the Taça de Portugal, taking his overall total to 13 goal involvements.

His strike in the second leg against FK Bodø/Glimt further showcased his attacking ability, while his defensive performances across both legs of the quarter-final clash with Arsenal were equally impressive.

It appears Arsenal are stepping up their interest in signing Araujo, as Konur reports that the newly crowned Premier League winners have made enquiries over the possibility of the fullback’s transfer to the Emirates Stadium in the summer.

Arsenal face battle with Man Utd in Araujo chase

While Sporting have placed £70m on the Uruguayan international, the North London club are hoping a deal could be secured for a lower fee, with Manchester United also showing keen interest.

While Matías Araujo is mainly deployed as a left-back, his adaptability enables him to function in more advanced positions such as winger or attacking midfielder.

Araujo could represent a strong acquisition for Arsenal, given his ability to offer tactical flexibility across both defensive and attacking setups.

However, the Gunners already possess multiple alternatives in that area, including Riccardo Calafiori, Piero Hincapié, and Myles Lewis-Skelly, with Jurrien Timber also capable of operating there when required.

Even in a scenario where Lewis-Skelly were to leave, Arsenal would still retain adequate depth in that position, meaning a significant investment in another left-back may not be strictly necessary.
