Arsenal lead race to sign Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall
Arsenal are reportedly leading the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur star Lucas Bergvall, as per TEAMtalk.
Since moving to the Emirates Stadium from Real Sociedad last summer, Martin Zubimendi has established himself as an undisputed starter. Alongside the Spaniard, Declan Rice has been starting regularly in midfield.
Christian Norgaard was purchased from Brentford to support Zubimendi, but Mikel Arteta hasn’t been impressed by the Dane.
As a result, he has struggled to find regular game time, while Mikel Merino has been out injured over the last few months. Therefore, Zubimendi and Rice have been taking on enormous workloads this term.
Norgaard is set to turn 33 next year and has a contract until 2027, with Arsenal having an option to extend his deal for a year further. So, it appears Arsenal have already started exploring options to replace the former Brentford star.
TEAMtalk claim that Arsenal are keen on purchasing Bergvall after monitoring his development closely and could make a formal approach in the summer.
However, purchasing the 20-year-old won’t be straightforward for Arsenal as Chelsea, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Fiorentina, and Barcelona are also in this race.
Bergvall to Arsenal
Moreover, Tottenham consider Bergvall as unsellable, with his existing deal set to run until 2031. The midfielder is even happy to stay at the Lilywhites.
However, the report state that with Tottenham languishing in the relegation zone, they might be forced to sell top-class talents like Bergvall if they fail to retain their top-flight status.
Arsenal are currently leading the race to sign Bergvall, alongside Chelsea, after doing the groundwork for this deal. However, Tottenham are reluctant to sell the Swedish international to Arsenal due to the fierce rivalry between the two clubs.
Chelsea are even preparing to submit ‘imaginative proposals’ to persuade Tottenham to let him leave. Bergvall, valued at around £35m by Transfermarkt, is a box-to-box midfielder by trait but is also comfortable in the creative midfield position.
Bergvall is a talented player and could be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they sign him. However, it remains to be seen whether the North London club will eventually make a move to seal the deal.
