Arsenal have advantage to sign Leipzig’s Yan Diomande
Arsenal are reportedly in an advantageous position to sign RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande, as per Caught Offside.
The Gunners have enjoyed a stellar campaign for most of this season and were even hoping to win the quadruple. However, they have started stuttering in recent weeks. Following a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final last month, they have now been knocked out of the FA Cup.
Mikel Arteta fielded a well-changed team against Southampton in the quarter-final last weekend, but they ended up losing the game 2-1 courtesy of Shea Charles’ late winner.
As a result, Mikel Arteta has found himself under pressure and will need to guide his team to at least one major trophy, the Premier League or the Champions League, this campaign.
Meanwhile, with the summer window approaching quickly, the North London club have already started exploring options to refresh the squad and continue challenging on all fronts next season.
Now, Caught Offside claim that Arsenal are interested in strengthening the left flank and have registered their interest in signing Diomande, having been impressed by his performances.
Liverpool are also in this race as they have identified him as an option to replace Mohamed Salah. However, Diomande wants to join a Champions League team if he were to leave Leipzig this summer.
Diomande to Arsenal
The Reds have displayed inconsistent performances this season, sitting fifth in the Premier League table with 49 points from 31 matches. So, they aren’t guaranteed to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition next season.
As a result, Arsenal are currently in an advantageous position over the Merseyside club to seal the deal and have held talks to enquire about the move.
With Leipzig looking likely to qualify for the Champions League next season, Diomande might even opt to stay at the German side.
But Leipzig might demand around £87m if they are forced to cash-in on Diomande, with the player’s existing deal set to run until 2030.
Diomande is a versatile forward as he can play on either flank. The 19-year-old has shown glimpses of his high potential this season and could be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him.
However, it remains to be seen whether the North London club will eventually manage to secure his services by defeating Liverpool in this race.
