Arsenal plot swoop to sign Real Madrid’s Valdepeñas
Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a move to sign Real Madrid defender Victor Valdepeñas, as per Spanish outlet AS.
The 19-year-old started his youth career at Villa Rosa before moving to Rayo Vallecano. After spending a couple of years at Los Franjirrojos, he initially joined Los Blancos’ famous La Fabrica academy back in 2018.
However, he signed for Leganés in 2020, then returned to La Fabrica a couple of years later. The youngster made his first team debut for Alvaro Arbeloa’s side in December last year.
However, he hasn’t been able to play regularly yet. Still, AS report that Arsenal have registered their interest in signing Valdepeñas after being impressed by his performances for Real Madrid Castilla U21.
The player had a £43m release clause in his contract, but Real Madrid have handed him a fresh term until 2029, with a salary hike and an increased exit clause.
The report state that Arsenal will have to overcome fierce competition to finalise the operation as AC Milan are also interested in the Spanish.
Valdepeñas, standing at 6ft 2in tall, is a left-footed centre-back by trait but is also comfortable in the left-back position. He is quick, technically sound, can play out from the back, and is efficient in defensive contributions.
Valdepeñas to Arsenal
Arsenal currently have Gabriel Magalhaes, Riccardo Calafiori, Piero Hincapié, and Myles Lewis-Skelly as options to deploy on the left side of the defence.
Gabriel has been an undisputed starter in the LCB position, while Mikel Arteta uses Calafiori and Hincapié in the left-back position rotationally. Hincapié joined on a loan deal from Bayer Leverkusen last year, and Arsenal are likely to make the move permanent this summer.
Therefore, the Gunners are already well-resourced at the back. However, Lewis-Skelly has been linked with a move away, having struggled to find regular game time this season.
On the other hand, Calafiori has had fitness problems in recent years. So, it appears Arsenal have started lining up potential options to strengthen the backline.
Valdepeñas is a talented player, but is still very young and needs time to develop. It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to secure his services.
