Arsenal ‘pushing hard’ to sign Julian Alvarez
Arsenal are reportedly ‘pushing hard’ to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, as per Spanish outlet Sport.
Having enjoyed great success at Manchester City, the Argentinian international joined Los Rojiblancos ahead of last season. He enjoyed a stellar debut campaign at the Estadio Metropolitano, making 36 goal contributions across all competitions.
This season, the South American has continued to showcase his productivity, scoring 11 goals and notching up five assists in 31 appearances in all tournaments.
However, while citing and translating the print version of Sport, Sport Witness report that Alvarez has become frustrated with Diego Simeone’s pragmatic style of football, so he is ready to leave the Spanish capital to take a new challenge in his career.
Alvarez’s preference is to join Barcelona, and the Blaugrana is keen on purchasing him as a potential long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
However, Atletico Madrid have slapped a whopping £87m price tag on their star man’s head, with his existing deal set to run until 2030. The Blaugrana don’t want to finalise the operation by matching Simeone’s side’s asking price.
Apart from the Blaugrana, Chelsea and Arsenal are also interested in Alvarez and are ‘pushing hard’ to lure him away from the Estadio Metropolitano.
Alvarez to Arsenal
The Gunners are ‘prepared to break the bank’ to sign Alvarez, with the player’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, having recently travelled to the UK to potentially hold talks with both Arsenal and Chelsea over a deal.
Arsenal decided to reinforce the centre-forward position by purchasing Viktor Gyokeres last summer. However, the Swedish international has struggled to find his feet in the Premier League thus far.
On the other hand, Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz have had fitness problems in recent years. Therefore, if Gyokeres’ form doesn’t improve over the coming months, Arsenal should look for a new prolific striker.
Alvarez is one of the best strikers in the world and previously showcased his qualities in the Premier League during his time with the Citizens. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services in the summer transfer window.
