Arsenal could sign Brentford star Igor Thiago
Arsenal could reportedly attempt to sign Brentford forward Igor Thiago, as per Football Transfers.
The Gunners decided to reinforce the centre-forward position by purchasing Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP last summer. He showcased his productivity at the Jose Alvalade Stadium over the last two seasons but has failed to replicate that in the Premier League thus far this season.
He has netted only five goals in 19 league appearances and hasn’t been able to score a goal from open play in the last nine matches. Therefore, questions have started to arise over whether he possesses the necessary qualities to flourish in the Premier League.
Now, Football Transfers report that Arsenal could already look to replace the Swedish international this year and have identified Thiago as a serious option, having been impressed by his recent eye-catching displays.
However, the Brazilian isn’t the only striker option on the Gunners’ wishlist as Marcus Thuram of Inter Milan and FC Porto star Samu Aghehowa are also on their radar.
Thiago, valued at around £30m by Transfermarkt, joined the Bees from Club Brugge ahead of last season and has a contract until 2029. So, they aren’t in any rush to sell him, and Brentford always play hardball to sell their big assets.
After struggling with fitness problems in his debut campaign at Gtech Community Stadium, the Brazilian has enjoyed a stellar campaign thus far this season, scoring 17 goals and registering a solitary assist in 22 appearances across all competitions.
Thiago to Arsenal
The South American netted five goals in the last two Premier League matches and is currently the second-highest scorer in the league, sitting just behind Erling Haaland.
He has already showcased his productivity in the Premier League and is still just 24, meaning he isn’t a finished article yet and has plenty of room to develop.
He is quick, strong, good in the air, efficient in hold-up play, possesses poacher instinct inside the box, and also works hard without possession.
Therefore, Thiago would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in January or next summer.
