International defender to join Arsenal after agreeing terms over contract

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Stephan Lichtsteiner is set to join Arsenal on a one-year contract following fresh negotiations with the Juventus right-back.

Unai Emery is working hard trying to revamp our defence and a new right-back is understood to be a priority as we desperately need to ease the load on Hector Bellerin.

The Spaniard played more minutes than any other Arsenal player last season as we had no viable back-up available leaving Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Calum Chambers deputising on the odd occasion Bellerin was rested.

Lichtsteiner has emerged as a prime target with the Metro reporting late last week that the Switzerland international visited London Colney to hold talks with Arsenal chiefs about a move to the Emirates.

A deal is now on the verge of completion as Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claims that Lichtsteiner has agreed terms over a one-year contract following further negotiations with Arsenal.

An option to extend the deal by a further year is also on the table but the report says Lichtsteiner is set to join Arsenal on a short-term deal and should become our first major signing of the summer.

The 34-year-old is available on a free transfer as his contract with Juventus expires next month following seven excellent seasons in Italy that saw him win seven consecutive Serie A titles.

Obviously he’s not the most exciting signing but it’s certainly a sensible addition to the squad as Lichtsteiner will add experience and a winning mentality to the team.

Lichtsteiner will captain Switzerland at this summers World Cup and it seems he’ll head to Russia as an Arsenal player as this deal is expected to be wrapped-up soon.
