Arsenal injury boost: Star declares himself fit to face Atletico Madrid
Arsenal have been handed an injury boost as Alex Iwobi has declared himself fit for our huge Europa League semi-final against Atletico Madrid.
We head to Madrid on Thursday night needing a positive result after blowing a golden chance to take control of the tie having been held to a 1-1 draw against their 10-men last week.
Following that frustrating game, Iwobi played the full ninety minutes against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon as a Marouane Fellaini stoppage time header consigned us to a sixth consecutive away defeat.
The attacker was seen holding and stretching his hamstring during the closing stages of the game at Old Trafford and Arsene Wenger admitted in his post-match interview that Iwobi was a doubt to face Madrid.
However, it looks like the Nigerian international has made a swift recovery as Iwobi has now told reporters that the injury is ‘very good’ and he’s confident he’ll be fit for the trip to Spain on Thursday night.
The 21-year-old is quoted as saying by the Mirror:
“I believe it is very good. I am still being assessed but to me it is good and I will be okay,”
“We will have to wait and see but I believe I will be okay and fit (for Atletico).”
I don’t think Iwobi will start against Madrid but he’s one of the few attacking options we’ll have available from the bench so it’s good to hear he should be fit for the game.
We know we need to score at least once to stand a chance of progressing to the final following the first leg 1-1 draw but that won’t be easy against a Madrid side that have kept 11 consecutive clean sheets at home!

If Atletico do park the bus Arsenal must unleash powerful shots from outside the 18 and attack the rebounds. A few long-range blasts might result in a goal, but it will certainly draw their defense out and mess with their shape which means space for through balls and chips over the top to runners in behind. We’ll have to see more movement and imagination at the top, and more clinical finishing. Arsenal should have been up 3-0 by the end of the first half, we have to put our chances away this time. 2-1 to the Arsenal. COYG!!!!
